What is the story about?
US forces carried out "self-defence" strikes against Iran on Tuesday evening US time, a few hours after US President Donald Trump blamed Iran for shooting down an American military helicopter off the coast of Oman.
"The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression," the US Central Command wrote on their "X" handle. The remarks did not specify the targets that have been hit or the extent of the damage caused.
According to Iran's state-run IRIB, the Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz has been struck, with at least six explosions.
US President Trump told an ABC News reporter that this is a response to what they did with the US helicopter last night and that the response should be very strong and powerful.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social last evening Indian time that he was informed by his military that an Apache helicopter was shot down while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz, and that the US will have to respond to it.
Although Iran has not officially acknowledged shooting down the helicopter, its foreign minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on "X" that foreign forces in proximity to their territory are at constant risk on account of their own human errors, plain accidents or being potentially caught in a crossfire.
In a separate post, Araghchi also wrote that Iran's forces will leave no attack or threat "unanswered". "Leave our region if you want to be safe," he wrote on "X".
Bloomberg has reported that mediation efforts between the US and Iran to strike a deal remain intense, citing people familiar to the discussions, adding that talks between all parties are expected to continue this week.
In remarks to the media earlier in the day, Trump had said that he will announce "complete and total victory" in the next two weeks and that a good deal will be signed with Iran where they will not have a nuclear weapon.

Despite its defeats on the battlefield, the U.S. opted to test our determination. Our Powerful Armed Forces will leave no attack or threat unanswered.
Leave our region if you want to be safe. History of the Persian Gulf has many chapters on dire fates of intruding outsiders. pic.twitter.com/O17GGtklxA
