Purple comes with a royal heritage of its own. And understandably so. It's energy is neither hot nor cold - yet it holds a certain weight across its hues, be it soft lavenders, lilacs and mauves, or deep plums, violets and aubergines. It's the kind of colour that makes you sit up and take notice, and once a space has been tastefully painted and upholstered in purple, it becomes a little hard to imagine it any other way. In the same breath, doing purple interiors right involves striking a very specific kind of balance. Singular accents without an atmosphere that draws the spotlight to it feel like wasted potential, while introducing the purple spectrum in a room without proper intention can just as easily make it look kitschy and like a design
job gone bad. So how does one go about getting their purple mood boards right?
Lavender for Beginners
If you're tepid about dipping your toes into a world of purple, start soft - literally, with lavender. All this soft shade of purple needs to transform a space into something that looks right out of a fairytale book are accents of soft whites and creams. If wooden interiors are your aesthetic, paler hues of soft wood like oak work well. These combinations work great for nurseries, reading nooks or wellness spaces, creating a calm and inviting aura.
Aubergine On the Plate - and the Walls
Nothing makes a statement like a dining space that holds gravity. And aubergine will do just that. This shade, when used as the star of the space, manages to create a visual divide which instantly elevates it. It's evidently rich, but also feels intimate. For an aubergine room, go for dark woods, brass tones on metals and velveteen upholstery.
Put Lilac to Work
Lilac can be as bright or as muted as you need it to be, depending on the hue you go for. If work feels chaotic and leaves you feeling depleted at the end of the day, consider painting the space - a home office or even a creative studio - in lilac, and preferably a dusty mix of it. This feels neutral, light and elevating, all at the same time, without falling into the trap of the beige parade. If you want to make the room pop, consider adding charcoal accents.
Plum Living
Your living area should feel worthy of having earned that name. So if lively is what you're going for, ditch the shade cards and focus your attention on the upholstery - and necessarily in plum. Match your sofas, curtains, rugs and accent chairs in a royal plum and keep the rest neutral, ideally with dark wood - and watch that room come to life as soon as the last plum piece falls into place.
Mauve Magic
If your bedroom does not feel like the most magical spot of the house, you're doing something wrong. And if you are, it's time for a mauve upgrade for the four walls within which you recede to rest and recover. Depending on what hue of mauve you pick, the overall energy of your room can feel grey, grounded and neutral; or pastel, pink and plush.
Either way, mauve is through and through a 'grown-up' shade. Keep the lighting necessarily soft to truly bring out the beauty of mauve.
