Expensive,
exquisite, eloquent. These are the words that come to mind the second you virtually step foot into actor turned anchor Shekhar Suman's Mumbai residence. It's a four-story penthouse in the city's bustling but posh Lokhandwala area, but the interiors will transport you to an afternoon high-tea party in London and the interior decor details - back to the Victorian era. Every corner in the house is soaked in the design principles of excess, and unapologetically so - a perfect reflection of Suman's own larger-than-life vibe. We dare you to find a negative space in this house! Here's taking a peek inside this ivory-coated vision of maximalism.
The Layout and Design Template
To begin with, Suman's residence spans four floors, beginning on the 19th of the building. Besides the obvious bedrooms, living spaces and baths, the penthouse also boasts of a royal study, office nooks, a home theatre and a private gym. Not just this, the real layout detail that will have your jaw on the floor is the number of balconies. Suman's home stands wrapped around in a whooping ten balconies, which too, seamlessly reflect the ethos of excess. Each of them are brimming with blooming plants top to bottom and give way to an open roof top terrace with a stunning sea view and a big little mangrove to stare out into, in bliss. Now making a space this big feel as elaborate as it does requires a lot of warmth in the way it is put together. Besides Suman's sense of hospitality, it's the beige and ivory walls that serve as a neutral palette of sort for the crystal chandeliers - there's too many to count - to bounce their warm, molten lighting off. The sense of aesthetic crowding the European and Victorian aesthetic offers takes care of the rest. Case in point are the global collectibles Suman has gathered from his trips abroad - an ornate chess table from New York and a purple-tinted San Diego vase that looks like it belongs in a museum make for some standout examples.

The Timeless Details
Suman may have a sense of appreciable grandiose to him and his home captures that rather well. But he is just as proportionately humble when it comes to opening his doors to guests. And as for the credit, he wholly hands it over to his wife, Alka. As a matter of fact, the house was put together by her, acting on a joint vision they had, based off their trips to England. The husband-wife had always wanted a grand England-style house for themselves. And so they created one on their home ground.

Only if acing maximalism was that easy! What stands out about Suman's home is how intentional each piece is - it could be a rug, a vintage table mirror nailed to the wall, a double-framed Bridgerton-style painting, or the play of warm and warmer show lights bouncing off the dim chandelier - you won't find a single item in the house that doesn't uniquely contribute to the visual impact of the room it sits in, or a single placement that doesn't seamlessly blend into the very heavy emphasis on symmetry. It's a masterpiece all right, and what's even more beautiful, is that the house looks and feels like it's been lived in - the most important factor which Suman has emphasised, turns a spaced into a 'home'.
