World Environment Day 2026: Climate Change, Plastic Pollution and Why Action Cannot Wait

Climate change is real, and every day we are witnessing its consequences. The Earth's climate is out of balance. The atmosphere and oceans are warming, and glaciers are melting. The World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) State of the Global Climate report 2025 confirms that the years 2015 to 2025 were the 11 hottest years on record, and that 2025 was the second or third hottest year ever recorded, at approximately 1.43°C above the 1850 to 1900 average. Plastic pollution is choking our oceans and land. Every year 19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers and seas. All About World Environment Day 2026

"Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world," states the United Nations.Each year, World Environment Day is hosted by a different country. In 2026, it is being hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan. Actions You Can Take to Help Save the Environment

You can start by taking small actions to help slow climate change. The United Nations lists a number of ways you can make a difference.

Save energy at home

Much of our electricity and heating is powered by coal, oil and gas. You can use less energy by reducing your heating and cooling, switching to LED light bulbs and energy-efficient appliances, washing your laundry in cold water, and hanging clothes to dry instead of using a tumble dryer.

Change your home's energy source

See whether you have the option to switch to renewable energy sources or install solar panels. "Switching your home from oil, gas or coal-powered energy to renewable sources of energy, such as wind or solar, can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 1.5 tonnes of CO2e per year," states the United Nations.

Use public transport, walk or cycle

These choices can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Living without a car can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 2 tonnes of CO2e per year compared with a lifestyle that relies on a car.

Clean up your environment

Water contamination affects everyone. We all need to play a role in cleaning up our surroundings and participating in local clean-up efforts at beaches, parks and rivers. According to the United Nations, "Every year, people throw out 2 billion tonnes of trash. About a third causes environmental harm, from choking water supplies to poisoning soil."
