Rani Ki Vav, A stepwell on the UNESCO Heritage list
Translated as Queen’s stepwell, Rani Ki Vav is located on the banks of the Saraswati River in Patan. The stepwell is said to have been constructed for Udayamati, daughter of Khengara of Saurashtra, Queen, and spouse of the 11th-century Chaulukya king Bhima I.
However, it was rediscovered in the 1940s and restored in the 1980s by the Archaeological Survey of India. The design is the finest example of an inverted structure, showcasing the sanctity of water. It is divided into seven levels of stairs with sculptures of gods. In 2014, it was listed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
Great Rann of Kutch: The famous and spectacular white desert of India
The famous salt marsh situated in the Thar Desert is spread over about 7500 km2 in area. This white desert is reputed to be one of the largest salt deserts in the world, and you will find various authentic Kutchi inhabitants living around the area. It is one of the must-do things when in Gujarat, a trip to the Rann of Kutch.
The best time would be during the Rann Utsav, which takes place between November and March. You can easily book a tent amidst the desert during the cultural festival and enjoy your stay.
Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park
Located in the Panchmahal district, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Champaner Pavagadh complex was built in the 8th century around the heritage city of Champaner and was founded by Vanraj Chavda, the king of the Chavda Dynasty.
One can wander around the forts starting from the hills of Pavagadh up until the city of Champaner, chalcolithic sites, a hill fortress, and remains of the 16th-century capital of the state of Gujarat.
