What is the story about?
The
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting rainfall in the plains and snowfall in higher reaches during early April.
Travellers planning a visit to the Union Territory have been advised to remain cautious, as unstable weather conditions are expected to persist over the coming days. The unstable weather conditions are likely to persist till April 10 due to an active western disturbance.
Western Disturbance to Drive Weather Changes
According to the IMD, the Western Himalayan region will witness intermittent precipitation, with cloudy skies prevailing across the Union Territory. Light to moderate rainfall, along with fresh snowfall, is expected in higher altitudes.
Weather observers also indicated that a strong western disturbance is expected to impact the region within the next 36 hours, bringing widespread rainfall and snowfall.
In a post on X, Kashmir Weather warned about the incoming Western Disturbance in the Union Territory. "A strong Western Disturbance is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir over the next 36 hours, bringing widespread moderate to heavy rain showers across the UT. Higher reaches and mountain passes, including Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road, Sadhna Top, and Razdan Top, are likely to witness fresh snowfall," it said.
Why the Sudden Weather Shift?
Experts attribute the sudden change in weather to a fresh western disturbance originating in the Mediterranean region. This system is causing moisture in the Himalayas, triggering rainfall in the plains and snowfall in mountainous areas.
Key Areas Likely to Be Affected
Popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam are expected to receive fresh snowfall. Meanwhile, rainfall is likely across the Kashmir Valley and parts of Jammu. High-altitude passes may experience slippery roads and reduced visibility, potentially disrupting travel.
Rainfall and snowfall are expected to disrupt road transport, especially in hilly and mountainous areas. Reduced visibility and slippery conditions may lead to temporary closures or delays on key routes.
