Rail ticket prices are most affordable in India as compared to neighbouring and developed countries, and the Indian Railways gave ₹60,000 crore subsidy last year to keep ticket prices low, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on December 10.
Replying to a question by Congress member MK Vishnu Prasad in the Lok Sabha on whether the government plans to restore rail ticket discount to senior citizens as it was before COVID-19 , Vaishnaw said the prices of tickets in India are about five or 10% of the prices in developed countries.
"Even compared to neighbouring countries, the ticket is kept at a very, very affordable price," the minister said during the Question Hour. Last year, the Indian Railways gave about Rs 60,000 crore subsidy so that the passenger transport can remain affordable, he said.

"Even compared to our neighbouring countries, India is providing the most affordable transportation to our citizens or passengers," Vaishnaw said.
Meanwhile, on train travel cost comparison between Hydrogen-fuelled trains and established, Vaishnaw said that it would be unfair. Since the Hydrogen-fuelled train-set and its infrastructure have been developed on a pilot basis, its direct cost comparison with established train systems at this stage would not be fair, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a written statement in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Responding to questions regarding the details of the timeline for the launch of the green hydrogen-fuelled trains and whether they cost more than the trains running on other energy sources, Vaishnaw said that the Indian Railways has taken up a state-of-the-art project for running its first hydrogen train on a pilot basis.
He said the planned operation is according to specifications framed by the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) to demonstrate the use of hydrogen-powered train technology in the Railways.

"Manufacturing of the Hydrogen Train-set has been completed. For providing hydrogen for use in this train-set, a hydrogen plant has been conceived at Jind. In this plant, hydrogen is being produced using electrolysis process which is key element of green hydrogen generation," Vaishnaw said.
