What is the story about?
Indian Railways is set to undertake one of its biggest upgrades in decades as it prepares to replace its 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a new high-capacity platform from August 2026. The modernisation drive aims to make ticket booking faster, smoother and more reliable for millions of passengers across the country.
Introduced in 1986, the existing reservation system has been the backbone of railway ticketing for around four decades. With a massive rise in online bookings and passenger demand, railway officials believe the ageing infrastructure has reached its operational limits.
During a review meeting held at Rail Bhavan, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed officials to ensure that the upgrade is carried out without causing inconvenience to passengers. Ministers of State for Railways V Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu were also present during the discussions.
"Started in 1986, this system has undergone several minor changes over the past 40 years. However, now it has been completely overhauled, and its capacity has been significantly expanded using state-of-the-art technology," the Ministry of Railways said.
The new reservation platform will significantly improve booking speed, system reliability and overall scalability. The upgrade comes at a time when nearly 88% of railway ticket bookings are now made online.
Indian Railways has steadily expanded its digital services over the years. The online booking portal launched in 2002 transformed railway ticketing in India, while the recently introduced RailOne super app has further streamlined passenger services. The app uses Artificial Intelligence to predict waitlist confirmation chances, reportedly improving prediction accuracy from 53% to 94%.
The RailOne app has already seen massive adoption, recording more than 3.16 crore downloads on Android devices and over 33 lakh downloads on iOS. Apart from ticket booking and cancellations, passengers can also use the platform to check live train status, coach positions, platform details and access grievance support through Rail Madad.
While passengers may not immediately notice major changes in day-to-day booking initially, the upgraded system is expected to offer a smoother booking experience, especially during festivals and high-demand travel periods.
The overhaul is also expected to improve waitlist predictions, strengthen system capacity for rising passenger traffic and better integrate railway services into a single app.
Travellers have been advised to continue using IRCTC for bookings and keep the RailOne app updated during the transition period. While the migration process is scheduled to begin in August 2026, Railways has not yet announced a final timeline for full implementation of the upgraded reservation platform.
For millions of people across the country,Indian Railways remains the backbone of affordable travel. In the financial year 2024–25, the Railways provided a passenger subsidy of ₹60,239 crore.
According to official figures, passengers effectively received an average concession of around 43% on ticket fares. "In other words, if the cost of providing the service is ₹100, the ticket price is only ₹57," the ministry added.
