What is the story about?
Three years after the renaming of Aurangabad city in Maharashtra, the Central Railway on October 26 said that Aurangabad railway station has been officially renamed as "Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station". Its new station code will be 'CPSN', the Central Railway said in a release. The station falls under the Nanded Division of South Central Railway.
The BJP-led Mahayuti government on October 15 issued a gazette notification to change the name of the Aurangabad railway station. The move came nearly three years after the then government headed by Eknath Shinde formally renamed Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The city, previously named after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, received the new name as a tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and second ruler of the Maratha state. Aurangabad railway station was opened in 1900, during the reign of the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is a tourist hub, surrounded by many historical monuments including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Meanwhile, as the Chhath Puja celebrations continue across multiple states in India, the Indian Railways is broadcating songs at railway stations since Friday to mark the auspicious festival and enhance the travel experience of passengers.
According to the Railway Ministry, the initiative will connect passengers with the festive spirit of Chhath Puja, ensuring a comfortable and culturally enriching journey.
"These devotional songs being played at railway stations during Chhath Puja are creating a sacred atmosphere for the devotees," the ministry said in a press note.
The release added that at 30 major stations — including Patna, Danapur, Hajipur, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Sonpur, New Delhi, Ghaziabad and Anand Vihar Terminal — the songs are “giving passengers a taste of the fragrance of their home and culture, thereby infusing devotion and joy into their journey.”
