What is the story about?
Zerodha co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath has shared a light-hearted story in which he lost a ₹2.5 lakh fitness bet to an employee who lost 30 kg in a year.
Kamath posted on LinkedIn that he was happy to lose the bet. He also shared a screenshot of his employee Rohit Agarwala, who posted a picture with him on social media and said he had won the ₹2.5 lakh fitness challenge.
"I lost a fitness bet, and I’m happy I lost this one,"Kamath wrote.
Agarwala, in his post, said his ‘biggest flex’ was winning ₹2.5 lakh from Kamath on a health challenge. He also added that the real reward was not the money but the fitness journey itself.
"The money is secondary. It's the push to take care of my health and lose 30kgs in the last year that has been the most rewarding. I don’t think any other place can give you this kind of an opportunity @zerodhaonline,"Agarwala wrote.
The post quickly caught attention on social media, with users praising Kamath and Zerodha for their employee-friendly and wellness-focused workplace policies.
One wrote, "Losing 2.5L to get someone to fix their health is the best ROI on the planet. Most wellness companies spend that on ads and move nobody." Another commented, "It's truly inspiring when "losing" a bet actually leads to such a positive and valuable outcome."

"Losing 2.5L on this bet is genuinely a small price for what it achieved. someone losing 30kgs and crediting their workplace for the push says more about culture than any wellness policy document could. more companies should be willing to put real incentives behind employee health rather than just talking about it," wrote the next.
In 2021, Zerodha launched a ‘Get Fit Challenge’ for its employees after the COVID-19 lockdown, citing lack of physical activity, work-life imbalance and poor diet.
Employees were asked to set a 12-month health goal and update their progress every month under this initiative. The company offered incentives, including a one-month salary bonus for those who achieved their goals and a ₹10 lakh lucky draw prize.
