What is the story about?
The Union Home Ministry has notified amendments to the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, changing registration requirements for certain foreign nationals seeking to extend their stay in India and revising provisions related to children born to foreign parents.
Registration deadline changed
Under the amended rules, foreigners who enter India on a visa valid for 180 days or less and wish to stay beyond that period must register themselves "any time before the expiry of the said period of 180 days".
The change replaces the earlier requirement that registration be completed "within fourteen days after the expiry of one hundred and eighty days of arrival in India".
The gazette notification issued on Monday states that, in Rule 12, the words "within fourteen days after the expiry of one hundred and eighty days of his arrival in India" have been substituted with "any time before the expiry of the said period of one hundred and eighty days".
Longer-stay visa rule
The amendment also applies to foreigners holding visas valid for more than 180 days that carry a condition that "each stay shall not exceed 180 days".
Such individuals, if they wish to remain in India beyond 180 days on a single occasion or in the aggregate during a calendar year, must register "anytime before the expiry of 180 days".
The revised rules further clarify that such registration will be granted "only in emergent circumstances".
Relief for children
The notification also changes requirements relating to children born in India where either or both parents are foreign nationals.
Earlier, parents were required to electronically inform the registration officer within 30 days of the child's birth to avail visa-related services, including the grant of a new visa and exit permission through the designated online portal or mobile application.
Under the amended rules, this requirement will not apply where either parent is an Indian citizen and wishes to retain the child's Indian citizenship.
However, if the child later acquires citizenship of a foreign country while in India, either parent must inform the registration officer within 30 days of the child acquiring that foreign citizenship.
Hospital reporting norms
The notification also revises reporting requirements and administrative procedures applicable to hospitals, nursing homes and other medical institutions that provide medical, lodging or sleeping facilities on their premises.
