If you are flying out of Mumbai on May 7, this is one detail you won’t want to overlook. Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will shut down for 6 hours on Thursday. Both the main runway 09/27 and secondary runway 14/32 will be closed from 11 am to 5 pm on May 7 for intensive pre-monsoon maintenance, reported LiveMint.
In a notice to passengers, airport authorities said: “On 07 May 2026, CSMIA Mumbai has a scheduled closure of both runways for 6 hours, from 11:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs, for intensive pre-monsoon maintenance. Consequently, several of our flights to and from Mumbai are cancelled. Kindly request you to check the flight schedule in advance before planning cargo movements to avoid any inconvenience."
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) coordinated this closure with airlines and aviation authorities six months in advance and most carriers have already reshuffled their schedules. Even so, hundreds of passengers on domestic and international routes will face cancellations, delays and rerouting.
The annual pre-monsoon maintenance is essential to keep CSMIA’s 1,033-acre airside in top shape. A special team checks runway surfaces for wear and tear. Mumbai’s monsoon is notoriously harsh with relentless rain, waterlogging and high humidity. The quality check is essential to ensure the runways are in peak condition before the season begins.

People travelling from Mumbai on Thursday could face flight cancellations and delays if their flight is scheduled between 11 am and 5 pm. Check your airline app or the CSMIA website for real-time flight status. Airlines may reroute flights through nearby airports such as Pune, Ahmedabad, and Goa or offer transfers via Delhi, Bengaluru, or Chennai.
Reach out to your airline immediately for rebooking or refunds. Flights outside 11 am to 5 pm are likely unaffected, but add buffer time. Shutting down for six hours at an airport with 1,000+ daily flights can delay operations into the evening.
