The Japanese transport sector already holds a nearly untouchable status when it comes to its international acclaim, especially among the globe trotters
of the world. This reputation is now set for a further bump up the ranks. Starting May 2026, international travellers will be able to purchase the new prepaid travel card. Dubbed the TOURIST PASMO it will allow easy commute through Japan's metros, travel and bus rides. Not just this, its ease of use will also extend to vending machines and convenience stores.
What is New About the TOURIST PASMO Card?
If someone absolutely had to criticise the Japanese transport system, across their trains, buses and metro network, navigation is what would potentially come up. This concern too, now gets taken care of with the launch of the TOURIST PASMO. It is an official upgrade on the PASMO PASSPORT which had been discontinued in 2024. What's different about the TOURIST PASMO is its new integrated circuit which allows you to just tap and be done - be it boarding a train, catching a bus or buying some Japanese convenience store snacks. As a matter of fact, as per an NDTV report, the card itself has been vibrantly designed, full of characters and colour, and also features the symbol for travel - the perfect souvenir for when you finally head back home from Japan.
Why was the PASMO PASSPORT Discontinued?
The PASMO PASSPORT had been discontinued in August 2024. The goal was always to transition towards updated tourist IC cards. It was phased out and travellers in the meantime switched to 'Welcome Suica' cards, which pretty much served the same function. The PASMO PASSPORT too had a 28-day expiration timeline, unlike the regular PASMO cards whose validity stretched up to 10 years.
Things to Keep in Mind About the TOURIST PASMO
The card, from its date of issue, is valid for 28 days. It is only applicable for use by international tourists, specifically on short visits, capping off at 28 days. It will be easily available for purchase at the major Japanese airports like the Narita and Haneda airports. It will also be available for purchase at nearby stations. The TOURIST PASMO can cost anywhere between ₹590 to ₹5,900 depending on where you're purchasing it from. One thing to keep in mind is to use this card thoroughly if you will be purchasing it as refunds of leftover amounts are not available.
