Air travel across large parts of North and East India continued to face disruption on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, as dense winter fog led to reduced
visibility and precautionary flight cancellations. Several airports, including Delhi, were affected during early morning hours, forcing airlines to slow operations and cancel select services in the interest of passenger safety. IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, confirmed a fresh round of cancellations, issuing a travel advisory late Tuesday night warning passengers of possible delays and changes. In a post on X, the airline said fog was expected across parts of North and East India, which could impact flight movements during early hours due to low visibility. “As the morning approaches under misty winter skies, fog is predicted across parts of North and East India, which may lead to reduced visibility and a slower pace of flight movements during the early hours. In the interest of safety, some flights may experience delays or adjustments,” the airline said.
Delhi And Regional Airports Affected
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport once again emerged as one of the worst-hit hubs, with knock-on effects across domestic routes connecting North, East and Central India. Airports in Lucknow, Amritsar, Srinagar, Patna, Gaya, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Kolkata also saw operational challenges, particularly during the early morning window when fog tends to peak.

Why Winter Fog Continues To Hit IndiGo Hard
Fog-related disruptions are a recurring challenge every winter, particularly for airlines with dense domestic networks like IndiGo. As a low-cost carrier with high aircraft utilisation and tight turnaround schedules, even minor visibility restrictions at major hubs such as Delhi can trigger widespread ripple effects.
While modern aircraft are equipped to handle low-visibility landings, airport runway categories, crew availability, and air traffic flow restrictions often limit how many flights can operate safely during peak fog hours. Airlines therefore choose cancellations over prolonged delays to stabilise operations for the rest of the day.
What Passengers Should Do
IndiGo has advised passengers to:
Check flight status before leaving for the airport
Opt for web check-in and flexible travel options where available
Monitor airline alerts and airport advisories during early morning hours
