(BMC) is planning a ₹2,395-crore cable-stayed bridge connecting Madh Island and Versova, a project that could significantly change everyday travel across Mumbai’s western suburbs. The proposed Madh Island to Versova Bridge will cross Malad Creek and create a direct road connection between the two areas, which currently have no direct road link. At present, motorists travelling between Madh Island and Versova have to take a long road detour of around 18-20 km. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey can take anywhere between 60 and 90 minutes. Once the bridge is operational, the same journey is expected to take around 10 minutes. Madh-Versova Bridge: What Is Being Planned?
The proposed Madh Versova cable stayed bridge is expected to be around 2.06 km long. The project has been designed as a four-lane bridge, with facilities not just for vehicles but also for pedestrians and cyclists. According to the current plan, the bridge will also feature special lighting and emergency facilities. A wider carriageway is expected to help accommodate traffic as connectivity between the two neighbourhoods improves. For residents of Madh Island, the impact could go beyond simply saving time on the road. A direct connection to Versova could make access to workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, shops and other parts of Mumbai considerably easier.
Currently the Madh Island and Versova are separated by Malad Creek. Without a direct road connection, commuters travelling by car or other road vehicles have to take a circuitous route instead of crossing the creek directly. There is already a jetty service between Madh Island and Versova, but it does not operate throughout the year or throughout the day. The service is suspended during the monsoon, making it an unreliable alternative for people who need to travel between the two areas regularly. That is why the proposed bridge could be such a major connectivity upgrade.
When Will Madh Island Bridge Construction Begin?
The Madh Island bridge construction has not yet entered its main civil works phase. Preliminary activities, including soil testing and surveys, have already been undertaken, but the project still requires the necessary clearances before full-scale construction can move ahead. The BMC is aiming to begin construction by the end of the 2026 monsoon season. If the project proceeds according to the current schedule and receives the required approvals, the bridge is expected to be completed by 2029.
