The pristinely green and rolling landscape of Shillong can feel both mostly represents a sense of calm and quiet, though the city can takeover when it comes
to the hustle and bustle. This also largely depends on whether you catch it under clear blue skies or on a stormy afternoon which turns misty with the sunset. This Meghalaya hill station, known for its pine forests, waterfalls, musically rich culture is open for a visit right through the year. But each window brings with it a distinctly different pace and version of the city, proudly called the 'Scotland of the East'.
Best Time to Visit Shillong
The most popular time to visit Shillong is between March to June, widely considered the city’s peak season. This stretch sees pleasant temperatures ranging between 10C to 25C, making it ideal for long drives, cafe hopping and exploring the natural landmarks of the city. The weather is particularly inviting for visiting spots like Umiam Lake and Elephant Falls - clearer skies and crisp air in Shillong during this stretch of the year elevate the experience. Naturally, this also draws larger crowds, along with higher hotel tariffs. You may still be able to steal a quieter, more solitary experience during peak season if you choose to stay farther away from the city centre.Shillong’s monsoon stretch from June to September which understandably transforms the city into an intensely lush, rain-washed landscape. The waterfalls are at their most dramatic and the mist in the air and the rolling greens of the hills make it almost feel like a cinema still. However, heavy rainfall also does mean travel disruptions. Monsoon is technically off-season in Shillong, especially after the first month of rains set it. However, this can very much be on your monsoon getaway list if you’re planning to mostly stay in. If anything, the rains lend the city a charm that’s hard to replicate.
October to February is Shillong's winter stretch. Temperatures tend to oscillate between 12C and 16C, which is the comfortable kind of chilly. However, night time can feel extreme as the temperatures plummet to anywhere between 2C and -4C. That being said, this is the time to be out and about in the city if you appreciate clear skies, drier weather - and most importantly, the Cherry Blossom Festival!
