What is the story about?
For decades, economy class has meant one thing: upright seats, stiff necks, and the quiet endurance of long-haul travel. But Air New Zealand is attempting
to rewrite that experience with something that feels almost surreal, bunk beds in the sky. Called the SkyNest, this new concept introduces lie-flat sleeping pods for economy passengers, a first in commercial aviation. And yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a compact section of stacked beds where you can leave your seat behind and actually sleep mid-flight.
What exactly is SkyNest?
SkyNest is a dedicated sleep zone made up of six lie-flat pods arranged in a triple-bunk layout, two columns, three levels high. Each pod is roughly 6.5 feet long and about 64 cm wide, designed to fit an adult comfortably. These pods aren’t part of your seat, they’re a separate space located between economy and premium economy cabins. So instead of reclining awkwardly, passengers can book a four-hour sleep session and climb into their assigned bunk for proper rest. Each pod comes with thoughtful details:- Fresh bedding (pillow, sheets, blanket)
- Privacy curtains
- USB charging ports and reading lights
- Ventilation and ambient lighting designed for sleep
- A seatbelt (yes, even in bed) for turbulence safety
How does it work mid-flight?
Here’s the catch, you don’t get the bed for the entire journey. Passengers will book a slot (typically four hours), and once your time starts, you leave your seat and head to the SkyNest zone. After your session, the crew resets the pod, fresh linen, quick clean, and the next passenger rotates in. On a single flight, around 12 passengers can use the pods across two sessions. There are also a few ground rules, no eating in the pods, no sharing, and yes, snoring is allowed (earplugs are provided for a reason).
After years of delays and testing, SkyNest is finally set to become a reality. Bookings are expected to open in May 2026, with the first flights rolling out from November 2026. The debut route is going to be ultra-long-haul flights like Auckland to New York, which can stretch up to 17–18 hours, exactly the kind of journey where sleep isn’t a luxury, but a necessity. Pricing is expected to start around $495 (approx. ₹40,000) for a four-hour session, on top of your regular economy ticket.
