What is the story about?
Back in the day, people needed a reason to travel, a why, more so. Maybe they had not taken a vacation in a long time, or they thought the mountains were
calling for a mental health break. But those reasons have ceased to exist anymore. There is no why that exists when people are planning for their next vacation, the question now is about, when? When the long weekend is around the corner, when the maid is on a break herself and no ones want to cook, or maybe when you just feel like it you pack your bags and leave to the nearest hill station.
Indians Are Traveling For A Vibe Check
According to the latest study titled 'Travel Research 2026,' more than half of Indian travelers are increasingly taking trips without waiting for a big thing to happen. Everyday moods, small wins, or just a breakup are increasingly emerging as travel triggers. The study found that 58% of Indian travelers had taken atleast one trip without any reason at all and simply because they wanted to while 57% of travelers have taken at least 2-3 leisure trips in the past year that were not linked to any major celebration, life event or a milestone in particular. The study in question was commissioned by Booking.com and was conducted by the online market research and data analytics group YouGov in May among 1,000 consumers aged 18 years and above across 10 Indian cities.
The study mentions that, "From celebrating personal micro-wins to simply needing a change of scenery, today’s travelers are proving that spontaneous, everyday getaways are the new normal. When the urge hits, no formal justification is necessary because travelling just is the best reason of all."
Small Wins Are Sweet Vacay Treats
About 61% of Indian travelers were noted to have booked a trip to celebrate small wins. And they were literally small, not like excelling in the career or marriage. These goals are everyday life achievements like smashing a fitness goal or simply getting through a tough week at work. At the same time, 55% travelers went about on a staycation just to enjoy their luxury stay at a hotel whole 57% travelers did so for a 'vibe check' when the local weather was too unbearable to be around. Another 48% of travelers booked a stay to find a better backdrop for their photos and videos, wherein they would record themselves in a room.
This is essentially denoting a bigger travel shift in the industry where the mindset of people around leaving their homes and going on a vacation is evolving big time. Indian travelers are not associating a vacation anymore with something they 'deserve,' it's now more so a part of their everyday life like eating from a restaurant in the city or stepping out to watch a movie.
Funnily enough, the study also mentions that for some, about 22% people, booking a trip happened because their astrologer said it was an auspicious time to travel. Now who could've thought that?
