Just 50 kms down south Goa is a small city called Karwar. Located in the Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, Karwar happens to be most popular for its
beaches, forts and temples. Although these beaches are as beautiful as any Goa beach or Mangalore beach, Karwar is not too developed for tourists. A little far away from the hustle bustle of the city, is a tiny secluded island named Kurumgad. Slowly but surely this little island is becoming one of the most exciting destinations for travellers who are looking for more than the usual crowded beaches. Kurumgad has an unusual tortoise-like shape and that is what really sets it apart. The island looks like a gigantic turtle lounging in the Arabian sea. But once you step onto it, you realise it is way more than just a scenic spot. Kurumgad Island has something for every traveller. If you love nature and calmness, you are free to stroll around the island at your own pace. For people who love adventure, activities like fishing, trekking, scuba diving, snorkelling and even dolphin-spotting boat rides are available here. The Narasimha Temple on the hilltop is also very popular among spiritual travellers. The stay options here are either tents or cottages. The island, however, does not have much places to visit. There is a beachfront which is small and cozy. It is very clean, secluded and remote. There is also a steep trek to the temple. Here are some things you can enjoy at the island:
- Stargazing and Bonfires: With just a little pollution, the night sky here happens to be stunning.
- Water Sports And Beach Chilling: These clear waters are perfect for swimming, scuba diving, snorkelling and just splashing around.
- Trek To The Old Fort And Narasimha Temple: There is an old fort that is connected to the Maratha kings, and the trek to the Narasimha Temple can be very fulfilling.
How To Reach Kurumgad?
Kurumgad can only be accessed by boat or ferry from Devbagh Beach in Karwar, which takes approximately 30 minutes. Once you reach Karwar, hop onto a ferry.Give this island a chance to let you immerse in its history, spirituality, adventure and serenity.
