If you’ve been dreaming of a Southeast Asian getaway that won’t drain your bank account, it’s time to turn your attention to Laos. Once known mainly among
backpackers, the country has now been crowned the most affordable travel destination in Southeast Asia for 2025, beating popular spots like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia. And this country is Laos. According to Time Out Magazine, you can travel around Laos for as little as ₹1,414 a day, covering accommodation, meals, and transport. That means you can enjoy lush landscapes, golden temples, authentic local food and experiences, at a fraction of the cost you’d spend elsewhere in the region. And numbers speak for themselves. In the first three months of 2025 alone, over 1.2 million international tourists visited Laos, up 11% from last year, generating more than $426 million in tourism revenue. Domestic tourism is booming too, with 1.4 million local travellers recorded in the same period.
Why Laos Is The Cheapest Country To Visit In Southeast Asia
Laos has always been a hidden gem for budget travellers, but now the secret is out. A night in a hostel dorm in Luang Prabang or Vientiane costs as little as ₹353, while a bed in Vang Vieng can drop to just ₹176. Meals are equally affordable — think steaming sticky rice with grilled pork for under ₹120, and a cold bottle of Beerlao for just a bit more.Even sightseeing won’t burn a hole in your pocket. The turquoise Kuang Si Falls, one of Laos’ most famous attractions, costs around ₹270 to enter, and the ticket also includes access to the Bear Rescue Centre. Many temples and scenic spots are free to visit, making it a dream for travellers who love exploring without constantly reaching for their wallet.
Transportation in Laos is another big win for travellers. Local buses and minivans between cities usually cost under ₹530. The relatively new Laos–China Railway connects Vientiane to Vang Vieng for about ₹700 in second class. If you want to explore independently, you can rent a motorbike starting from around ₹550 per day.
