If you’re planning a monsoon getaway to Himachal Pradesh, it’s time to hit pause. Back-to-back cloudbursts and flash floods have turned popular tourist
destinations into danger zones, with roads blocked, bridges washed away, and power lines down. From Kullu to Shimla’s Rampur, and from Lahaul-Spiti to Dharali, the state is reeling under severe weather disruptions. Here’s why these hill stations should be off your travel list, at least for now.
Kullu: Flash Floods & Evacuations
In Kullu district, two separate cloudbursts have brought life to a standstill. The first, near Bheemdwari in the Shrikhand Mahadev mountains, sent torrents through the Kurpan rivulet, forcing the evacuation of Bagipul Bazaar in Nirmand sub-division. Hours later, another cloudburst above Batahar village destroyed vehicles, cottages, and agricultural land. Rising water levels in the Tirthan River prompted preemptive evacuations downstream. While no casualties have been reported, roads are damaged, and tourist movement is impossible. If Kullu is on your itinerary, postpone your trip until conditions stabilise.Lahaul-Spiti: Bridges Swept Away
The remote beauty of Lahaul-Spiti has been cut off due to flash floods in Dhodhan, Changut, Udgos, and Karpat villages. Floodwaters came dangerously close to homes in Karpat, and bridges in Changut and Udgos have been washed away. The Miyar Valley has also seen school closures, and debris has blocked critical routes. With limited access and ongoing rescue work, this high-altitude district is currently not safe for travelers.Shimla’s Rampur: Road Connectivity Severed
In Rampur sub-division, a cloudburst near Nanti village destroyed two bridges, shops, and even a police outpost. Road connectivity downstream of Ganvi is completely cut off, leaving buses and ambulances stranded. Power outages and waterlogged homes have forced evacuations, and with the Kalka-Shimla Highway shut down, reaching Shimla itself has become challenging. Also Read: Cloudburst Hits Himachal Pradesh's Kullu Days After Uttarkashi Disaster - What We Know So Far
Mandi: Dangerous Crossings
In Mandi district, heavy rains have damaged roads and triggered flash floods. A tragic incident in Jarol saw a local resident drown after slipping from a temporary bridge, a stark reminder of how risky makeshift crossings can be in flood-hit areas. With 179 roads blocked in Mandi alone, tourists should steer clear until repairs are complete.According to Himachal Pradesh’s State Emergency Operations Centre, 323 roads are currently blocked, 130 water supply schemes are disrupted, and 79 power transformers are damaged.
