Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum in New Delhi is all set to become the world’s largest museum covering an area of 1.55 lakh sq m. It will have a total of 950
rooms. According to reports, this museum will display the nation's continuous civilisational journey - starting from the Indus Valley Civilisation to Modern India. The museum's first gallery is all set to open by the end of 2026.
Where Will The Museum Be Located?
The existing buildings of North Block and South Block will be converted into the national museum. In 2021, the government announced plans to convert the North and South Blocks into museums. For the unversed, the North and South blocks of the Central Secretariat complex were built during the 1930s. The South Block houses the Prime Minister’s Office, External Affairs Ministry, and Defence Ministry, while the North Block is home to the ministries of Finance and Home.More About The Museum
Upon completion, it will overtake The Louvre to become the largest museum in the world. It is being built in an Indo-French style and it will follow an adaptive reuse approach, under which it will preserve the architectural heritage of the iconic structures that it will occupy.The museum will house roughly 30 galleries across eight thematic zones that will also delve into the country's cultural, political and artistic heritage. The first gallery will open by late 2026.
Once ready, the museum will be a one-stop destination for anyone interested in learning about India's rich history and culture. The museum will cover various sections, tracing the continuous journey of Indian civilization. Visitors can expect to see exhibits on Indian art, architecture, music, dance, literature and philosophy. The museum will also showcase India’s contribution to various subjects like science, technology, and mathematics.
For the construction of museum, the design consultancy is being overseen by a consortium led by Arcop Associates, which is being led by Thai architect Kulapat Yantrasast as the principal designer.
