When winter takes over North India, most travellers automatically think of Shimla, Manali or Gulmarg. But this season, a quieter and unexpected destination
in Rajasthan has stolen the spotlight. As temperatures plunged to a bone-chilling –7°C, this rare cold wave turned a desert state into a winter wonderland - surprising everyone. Located in the Aravalli range, Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station and it is here that the mercury dipped dramatically. While snowfall remains rare, the freezing temperatures and white frost coating trees made Mount Abu look like a North Indian winter postcard. As per locals, this is one of the coldest spells the town has witnessed in years. As per reports, residents were seen gathered around roadside bonfires for warmth even after 9am. Tourists visiting Mount Abu also expressed surprise at the extreme chilly conditions. Many also said that the weather contrasted sharply with conditions in their home cities.

What makes Mount Abu so special has to be its contrast. Known for its mild climate through most of the year, the hill town serves as a summer retreat from Rajasthan's heat. And, winter then transforms it completely. During this time, early mornings begin with thick fog while nights feel very sharp and crisp, demanding layers and hot cups of chai.In fact, a long history of Hindu myths have also been woven into the very fabric of Mount Abu. Sitting around Nakki Lake, which, according to legend, the gods scraped from the ground using their nails. Lakes, caves, temples and ashrams tucked away in these rocky hills hold ancient stories and legends.

There are also many viewpoints that you can visit. For panoramic views, head towards Toad Rock or Sunset Point. Toad Rock, located southwest of the Raghunathji Temple with its 14th-century idol of Lord Rama near Nakki Lake, offering a unique rock formation. Sunset Point, 2 km southwest from town, is a popular spot to witness breathtaking sunsets. An amusement park at Sunset Point provides entertainment for families.
At Guru Shikhar, the highest peak (5,650ft) of the Aravallis, located 15km out of town, you can witness stunning views with a visit to the Dattatreya Temple. You can also explore the surrounding forests teeming with wildlife.
Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary
Dense forests and trekking trails disappear into the heart of Mount Abu, offering opportunities for exploration and adventure. Hike through the Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Spot over 250 species of birds, including the grey jungle fowl, or encounter animals like leopards, chinkara, sloth bears, wild boars, and langurs. The Tourism Department has identified 17 nature trails, perfect for a day of exploration.

Weather conditions are likely to improve from Saturday. However, another western disturbance is expected to affect Rajasthan and northwest India between January 26 and 28, with its peak impact forecast on January 27.As per the IMD forecast, there is no significant change in minimum temperatures over northwest India for the next two days.
