Each year, as the monsoon retreats, India becomes a crossroads for one of nature’s most beautiful journeys. Between September and November, migratory birds
from Siberia, Central Asia, and Europe reach India and settle in its wetlands, forests and coasts, turning some special spots into birding destinations. And this year, according to Agoda’s latest search data, travellers are paying close attention. The platform reports a 41% year-on-year increase in interest for four birding and nature destinations that offer tourists an insight into the lives of these winged species.
Best Birding Destinations In India
Kochi, Kerala
Kochi has emerged as the season’s breakout favourite, with international search interest surging 2.6 times over last year. The city’s surrounding sanctuaries, including Thattekad and Kumarakom, are paradise for birders, offering a mix of backwaters, tropical forest, and rice paddies where Brahminy Kites, Marsh Harriers, and even Siberian Cranes glide past.
Agoda’s data shows travellers from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore driving much of this interest. Hong Kong alone recorded a 66% rise in searches for trips to Kochi, hinting at Kerala’s growing global appeal as a destination for quiet, eco-led experiences.
Chilika, Odisha
Odisha’s Cuttack is also catching the eye of domestic travellers, with searches up 33% this season. The draw? Chilika Lake — Asia’s largest brackish lagoon and one of the world’s most vital wintering grounds for migratory birds. Each year, flocks of flamingos, herons, and painted storks descend here, painting the horizon pink and white. The lake’s scenic boat routes and community-led wetland tourism initiatives make it an example of sustainable travel done right.
Alwar, Rajasthan
Just a short drive from the legendary Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, Alwar has seen a 19% increase in domestic interest. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains a bucket-list stop for birdwatchers across the world. From Siberian Cranes and Bar-headed Geese to Gadwalls and Bluethroats, it’s a kaleidoscope of winged visitors. With easy connectivity from Delhi and Jaipur, Alwar makes for an ideal gateway for first-time birders.
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
Further south, Coimbatore and the Nilgiri Biosphere offer a very different kind of birdwatching. Endemic species like the Nilgiri Flycatcher and Black-and-Orange Flycatcher make their homes here, drawing those who prefer their birding with a side of trekking and mountain air. Agoda’s data shows a 6% rise in searches for Coimbatore, suggesting travellers are combining birding with nature retreats across the Western Ghats.
