What is the story about?
As Cyclone Montha intensifies over the west-central Bay of Bengal, both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are being impacted. The India Meteorological Department
(IMD) has issued high alerts for coastal districts, warning of strong winds, torrential rain, and possible transport disruptions over the next few days.
Odisha Tourism Issues Travel Warning
Odisha Tourism has appealed to visitors and locals to postpone all travel plans to the state’s coastal and cyclone-prone areas until October 31. In an advisory shared on social media, the tourism board urged travellers to stay updated on official weather alerts and be mindful of possible interruptions to bus, train, and flight services. “Due to the developing Cyclonic Storm Montha over the Bay of Bengal, we urge all tourists and the general public to exercise caution while planning travels to coastal Odisha,” the advisory read.According to IMD chief Dr. M Mohapatra, Cyclone Montha is making landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast, with wind speeds reaching 90–100 kmph. After that, the system will weaken slightly and move towards Odisha, likely bringing widespread rainfall and gusty winds to coastal areas.
Landslide Near Srisailam Temple In Andhra Pradesh
In Andhra Pradesh, heavy rains linked to the cyclone have already triggered a landslide near the Srisailam Mahakshetra, one of the state’s most revered temples. The incident occurred late at night near the Patalaganga steps, a key pathway for pilgrims, where three local shops were destroyed by collapsing debris. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the area was empty when the landslide occurred. Devotees currently in Srisailam have been advised to remain indoors as the temple town continues to be battered by unrelenting rainfall.Local authorities and temple officials are on high alert, with fears that continued downpours could lead to further slope collapses and infrastructure damage around the shrine. Floodwaters have already eroded several approach roads in the area, complicating rescue and repair efforts.
What Travellers Should Know
With Montha still active, officials are urging caution across both states. Travellers are advised to:- Refrain from visiting coastal or hilly regions until weather conditions improve.
- Follow local advisories and IMD updates.
- Expect delays or cancellations in public transport services.
The district administrations in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are closely monitoring the situation as Cyclone Montha continues its course, urging the public to prioritise safety over travel plans.
