India's Radhanagar Beach and Palolem Beach rank among the top five alongside Banana Beach in Phuket and Kelingking Beach in Bali. The Tripadvisor Travellers'
Choice Awards placed the two beaches in the top five, with Radhanagar Beach in Swaraj Dweep (formerly Havelock Island) taking third place, and Palolem Beach in Canacona, Goa, placing fourth. Indian beaches are gaining recognition, although there is still a long way to go in terms of reputation, as was evident in various comments on social media. One user wrote about the rankings, "Where you taking these polls??? India? No offence. But no Vietnam.no Maldives." (sic) Another wrote, "Palolem?????? It was sooo bad at evenings with crowd and insects. Patnem beach on the other hand felt like we were in a different country." (sic) It is not just the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards rankings either. The Golden Beach of Puri in Odisha has been transformed into a Blue Flag beach and is also officially ranked as India's cleanest beach. So, if you are planning your next beach holiday, here is why Radhanagar Beach and Palolem Beach might be worth exploring.
Radhanagar Beach, Andaman Islands
Located in Swaraj Dweep (formerly Havelock Island), it is famous for its powdery white sands and calm turquoise waters. According to Lonely Planet, it first appeared on the map as a notable diving destination thanks to the internationally renowned marine biologist Jacques Cousteau.A tip from travellers is to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds. Do not miss the sunsets here. Walk further away from the entrance for more privacy.
Palolem Beach, Goa
For self-declared Goa experts, there are better beaches than Palolem Beach in South Goa. However, this is a picturesque beach which, according to Incredible India's website, transforms into a vibrant collection of colourful, sophisticated bamboo and timber huts accompanied by palm-thatch restaurants. The beach also offers various adventure sports to be enjoyed. It is also known for its vibrant nightlife. It is also famous for its "Silent Noise" parties, a concept that does away with loud music after the 10 pm ban. Instead, with headphones on, you can join the party and dance the night away.
There are hundreds of hidden treasures along India’s vast coastline, and many beaches are well worth a visit. Of course, social media comments often show that people do not immediately associate Indian beaches with the best in the world. However, India is home to several scenic coastal escapes that can rival some of Asia’s finest destinations. Some of our picks include Varkala Beach in Kerala, known for its dramatic cliffs and Arabian Sea sunsets, Bangaram Island in Lakshadweep for its crystal-clear lagoons and coral reefs, and Tarkarli Beach in Maharashtra, a favourite for scuba diving and water sports. Travellers can also explore Gokarna’s Om Beach in Karnataka for its laid-back atmosphere, Butterfly Beach in Goa for its secluded charm, Cola Beach, Goa for its hidden lagoon and unspoilt scenery, and Agatti Island Beach in Lakshadweep for its stunning turquoise waters and pristine white sands.
