Code Reset Initiated
In response to a wave of software glitches that led to substantial disruptions in its e-commerce operations, including the loss or delay of a vast number
of customer orders, Amazon has mandated a temporary 90-day "code safety reset." This strategic pause is being implemented across specific engineering divisions. The decision stems from a discernible pattern of technical issues that have emerged since late 2025, prompting a re-evaluation and tightening of how software is developed and deployed within the company's crucial systems. This proactive measure is designed to restore stability and enhance the reliability of Amazon's digital infrastructure, ensuring a smoother experience for its vast customer base.
Stricter Code Protocols
The core of this "code safety reset" program involves the introduction of more rigorous requirements for engineers when they modify existing code or introduce new changes. Before any code update can be implemented live, it must now undergo a more thorough review process, requiring additional approvals and comprehensive documentation. This controlled approach aims to introduce 'controlled friction' into the development pipeline, a deliberate slowdown to catch potential issues before they impact live systems. This heightened scrutiny is particularly focused on the approximately 335 "tier-1 systems," which are services that have a direct and immediate effect on consumer interaction and satisfaction. The policy is expected to remain active for roughly three months, providing ample time for teams to audit systems and refine their development practices.
AI Coding and Stability
This significant reset also occurs at a time when there are increasing reports about Amazon's ambition to accelerate the adoption of generative AI tools in its operations, even if it initially impacts efficiency. Recent accounts from employees suggest that the rapid integration of AI-assisted coding tools has, in some instances, resulted in the creation of software with inherent flaws that necessitate extensive corrective actions. The company has faced particular scrutiny following incidents where service disruptions reportedly led to over 100,000 orders being lost and another incident affecting millions of purchases. While Amazon has not publicly disclosed the specifics of this new policy, the temporary controls are a direct response to these performance challenges, aiming to bolster infrastructure stability and regain customer trust.
