AI Tracks Majestic Lions
Indian Railways is implementing a groundbreaking AI-based intrusion detection system along a substantial 115-kilometer stretch of railway track that traverses
the renowned Gir National Park and Lion Wildlife Sanctuary. This pioneering initiative, recently sanctioned, is designed to meticulously monitor the movements of lions in and around the railway corridor. The primary objective is to prevent tragic encounters between the majestic Asiatic lions and passing trains. The system will generate critical alerts for train operators, station masters, and the central control room, enabling them to take immediate preventive measures and ensure the safety of both wildlife and train operations. This technological leap signifies a proactive approach by the authorities to harmonize infrastructure development with wildlife conservation efforts in this ecologically sensitive region.
Protecting Wildlife on Tracks
In addition to the advanced AI system, the railway network within the Gir forest area, which currently operates on a Metre Gauge section, adheres to strict speed restrictions for trains, particularly in identified lion movement corridors. This measure has been in place to minimize the risk to wildlife. Furthermore, the existing infrastructure includes two operational underpasses for lions, with plans underway for the construction of five additional underpasses. These underpasses are crucial for allowing safe passage of lions beneath the railway tracks, further reducing their need to cross active lines. The integration of these physical mitigation measures with the AI-based detection system creates a comprehensive safety net for the Asiatic lions of Gir.
Collaborative Conservation Efforts
The successful implementation and ongoing management of these wildlife protection measures involve robust coordination between Indian Railways and the state forest department. To facilitate this collaboration, a multi-tiered review committee structure has been established. This includes a circle-level committee, a divisional-level committee, and a range-level committee. These committees convene at different frequencies—quarterly, bi-monthly, and monthly, respectively—to discuss any emerging issues and ensure swift resolution. This structured approach allows for proactive problem-solving and continuous improvement in safeguarding the lions and ensuring the seamless operation of the railway, demonstrating a shared commitment to conservation.
