What's Happening?
AeroVironment has announced the delivery of its first P550 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to the US Army as of August 20. This delivery is part of the Army's Long-Range Reconnaissance (LRR) UAV requirement, with an undisclosed number of P550s purchased for this purpose. The P550 UAV, which was unveiled in 2024 and has been operational since 2023, is designed for vertical take-off and landing, powered by batteries, and offers up to five hours of endurance or a 40 km range. It can carry a payload of up to 15 pounds, providing between 100 and 200 watts of power. While primarily intended for reconnaissance, the P550 has also been tested for dropping small munitions and carrying mortar shells. The UAVs will be operated by a Transformation in Contact (TiC) brigade, which is tasked with experimenting with new UAVs before they are potentially adopted by conventional army units.
