What's Happening?
Wärtsilä, a leader in energy and marine technology, is set to deliver a 68 MW energy storage system to Zenobē in Lerwick, Shetland. This initiative aims to bolster energy security, reduce emissions, and support a transition to a cleaner power system in the Shetland Islands, located about 110 miles from mainland Scotland. The system will utilize Wärtsilä's Quantum2 technology, marking its first deployment in the UK, and will feature lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries known for their safety and reduced fire risk. The primary function of this system is to provide infrastructure services, ensuring grid backup and restoration capabilities in case of a disconnection from mainland Scotland. The project is expected to significantly reduce the reliance on the diesel-fired Lerwick Power Station, thus decreasing carbon emissions by 2.2 million tonnes over a decade.
