What's Happening?
Aclara Resources has partnered with Virginia Tech to operate a rare earth separation pilot plant at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg. The facility will utilize Aclara's solvent extraction technology to produce high-purity light and heavy rare earth elements from Brazil-sourced feedstock. This initiative aims to establish a supply chain for critical rare earth elements outside of China, enhancing domestic access to these materials.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Aclara Resources and Virginia Tech is significant for strengthening the U.S. supply chain for rare earth elements, which are essential for various high-tech applications, including electric vehicles and defense systems. By producing rare earths domestically, the U.S. can reduce its reliance on foreign sources, particularly China, and secure a sustainable supply chain for critical minerals.
What's Next?
Aclara Resources plans to continue testing its separation technology and expand its collaboration with academic institutions to advance research and development. The company aims to prepare the next generation of skilled talent and strengthen domestic access to critical minerals.
