What's Happening?
The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) in Saint Lucia, in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), hosted a Digital Agriculture Hackathon on August 7, 2025. The event was part of IICA's Digital Agriculture Week 2025, focusing on Agriculture 4.0, which aims to transform agriculture through advanced technologies. Twenty-seven participants, including SALCC students, staff, agri-entrepreneurs, and Ministry of Agriculture technicians, were divided into teams to tackle specific challenges at the SALCC farm. These challenges included improving piggery waste management, reducing heat stress in poultry production, and managing extended greenhouse operations. The hackathon encouraged participants to develop innovative solutions, which were judged by a panel of experts. The greenhouse management team won with their solution involving climate monitoring sensors and enhanced ventilation design.
