The Atlanta Falcons were thoroughly embarrassed at home during Sunday's 34-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium were treated to four-turnover, slop-filled mess that dropped the Falcons to 0-2 on the season.
The team's Week 2 loss featured two more missed field goals, six penalties and one quarterback change. Here are five takeaways from the Falcons' ugly loss to the Panthers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Cooper Rush turns the ball over 3 times, loses job
Veteran backup Cooper Rush got the start on Sunday and turned the ball over on his first play of the game. Rush scrambled for a first down but fumbled on his way to the ground and Carolina recovered. This play quickly set the tone for an ugly game in Carolina.
Rush threw two picks (nearly three), and was benched after his
second interception, which came late in the third quarter of Sunday's game. The 33-year-old went 10/17 for 86 yards and two interceptions (32.6 passer rating). He has likely made his last start for Atlanta this season.
Jack Strand enters game, throws pick-6 on first pass
Fans finally got what they were waiting for as Jack Strand made his NFL debut in their third quarter. Strand replaced Rush but threw a pick-six on his first career pass attempt. The ball was thrown into a tight window and deflected up into the arms of the Panthers linebacker Devin Lloyd, who returned it to give Carolina a 34-3 lead.
The rookie went 8/15 for 59 yards in his NFL debut, adding 16 yards on two rushing attempts. Strand's two turnovers overshadowed a few nice throws. Overall, the offense couldn't do anything right on Sunday.
Falcons suffer multiple key injuries
The Falcons also suffered a few key injuries in Week 2. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor suffered a rib injury and was replaced by Michael Jerrell. Cornerback A.J. Terrell was evaluated for concussion, and despite being cleared, he also injured his groin and did not return.
Edge rusher Samson Ebukam recorded a sack but later injured his hamstring and was ruled out for the game. We'll have to wait and see what the team says about these injuries on Monday.
Michael Penix Jr. to the rescue?
Penix is expected to be back in time for Week 2, according to ESPN insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter. This would give the Falcons' some much-needed clarity at the quarterback position. Penix's first start would come on the road against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.
"Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons' preferred starter, is nearing a return and could make his 2026 debut on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers," ESPN reported.
However, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski did not confirm the report after Sunday's loss, so the quarteback saga will continue for another day at least.
What's next for the Falcons?
In Week 3, the Falcons will face the Green Bay Packers on "Thursday Night Football" at Lambeau Field. If Penix plays, as expected, Atlanta will have at least a slightly better chance. The Packers defeated the New York Jets on Sunday to improve to 1-1.
Green Bay will have the advantage of playing at home in a short week. Thursday's game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime.
