The Atlanta Falcons made a few surprise cuts ahead of the NFL's roster deadline, but there was nothing earth-shattering about their initial 53-man unit. The biggest shocker was the fact that Atlanta waived defensive lineman Zach Harrison one day later. There were also a few preseason standouts who missed the cut.
One of those players was tight end Josh Simon, who made a case to be Atlanta's fourth tight end. Simon had two catches for 29 receiving yards in the preseason opener against the Broncos and added one catch for 21 yards against the Indianapolis Colts in the second exhibition.
Despite failing to make the team's 53-man roster (Atlanta only kept three tight ends), Simon landed on his feet with the Washington Commanders' practice squad. He
officially signed with former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn's team on Tuesday.
Simon is a talented player, with decent all-around ability as a pass-catcher and run-blocker. We were surprised that he wasn't brought back on Atlanta's practice squad, but the young tight end should have a chance to eventually crack Washington's 53-man roster.
Simon was one of three former Falcons to land with practice squads on Tuesday. Running back Nathan Carter has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, while defensive tackle Chris Williams has signed with Cleveland Browns' practice squad.
The Falcons still have one practice squad spot available. The team worked out veteran edge Khalid Kareem on Tuesday, plus Harrison could still be in play for Atlanta.
