The Atlanta Falcons looked to be on the verge of turning the corner, but that all-too-familiar sting of disappointment crept its way into Mercedes-Benz Stadium late in Sunday's 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
After a strong showing for the first three-and-a-half quarters, the Falcons defense came unglued in the fourth quarter. The Ravens scored a game-tying touchdown with under a minute left, and while Atlanta nearly got into field goal range, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. took a major shot in the ribs and had to come out of the game.
The Ravens got the ball first in overtime and easily drove the length of the field for a touchdown. Suddenly the Falcons' fate was in Tua Tagovailoa's hands, and he threw an interception to safety Kyle
Hamilton in overtime.
So instead of having a 3-2 record and one of the brightest quarterback prospects in the league, Atlanta is now 2-3 and facing more questions about Penix's health. The third-year QB was playing well before the injury, passing for 240 yards and a touchdown, including several clutch third-down conversions.
Penix said he doesn't expect to miss time, but Falcons fans couldn't help but spiral after another one of those soul-crushing losses with the entire NFL world watching.

Bro I got nothing. That loss felt like all the ones we choked in the 2018-2021 era.

If any of you #Falcons fans and/or media are going to start questioning Michael Penix's toughness for not coming out in overtime ... go take a lap. No one wants or needs to hear it.

I'm afraid the Falcons just lost this game by not cashing a TD after the sensational Bijan run.

Asking to finally make the playoffs for the first time in 8 years in the worst division in football is still too much to ask for smh. #Falcons
