The Atlanta Falcons' two-game winning streak came to a bitter end on Sunday night following their 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s promising night was cut short due to a rib injury he suffered late in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons played well enough to win for nearly four quarters of football, but they choked away a 23-15 lead in the final minutes. So instead of securing their third consecutive prime-time win, the Falcons failed to close the door and now sit at 2-3 for the season.
Here are five takeaways from Atlanta's 30-23 loss to Baltimore in Week 5.
Falcons defense scores early TD, falls short late vs. Ravens
What a weird game for Atlanta's defense. Things looked so promising early but fell apart late in the fourth quarter and in overtime.
The Falcons' safeties made some huge plays, starting with a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Sydney Brown punched the ball out from Ravens tight end Mark Andrews and Jessie Bates scooped up the ball and took it to the house to give the Falcons a 7-3 lead. Later in the game, Xavier Watts came up with a key pass deflection to stop the Ravens on third down with the game in the balance.
However, the No. 1 ranked run defense struggled to slow down Derrick Henry, while allowing Tyler Huntley to pass for 201 yards and two touchdowns (111.6 passer rating). The Falcons allowed 208 rushing yards and over 400 total yards to a Ravens offense without starting quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Huntley led two clutch touchdown drives to send the game to overtime and eventually won it. Atlanta's defense seemed to let off the gas late in the fourth quarter. This one will surely sting for a long time.

Michael Penix Jr.'s big night ends early due to rib injury
Penix did not complete a pass in the first quarter, starting 0/4 on the night. Then, something clicked in the second quarter. He found Kyle Pitts for a 13-yard gain, then hit his next four passes to end the drive with a touchdown to Pitts. The Falcons were in a tough defensive battle (for most of the night), and Penix made some clutch throws late, including multiple third-down darts to keep the chains moving.
The third-year quarterback took a big shot to the ribs and had trouble getting up. He came out of the game for one play. Then once overtime started, the Falcons went back to Tua Tagovailoa and he threw a pick on his third pass attempt. Penix looked incredibly discouraged by having to sit out at the end, but the team really shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. Penix finished 19/32 for 240 yards and one touchdown.
So will Penix miss time? Kevin Stefanski said the team was waiting on imaging, but Penix said he would do everything possible not to sit out.
"I've sat out enough in my career," Penix said after the game. "I am going to do everything I can in the training room to make sure I get back to where I want to be."
Bijan Robinson gets outplayed by Derrick Henry in prime time

"He's the best in the game," Bijan Robinson said about Derrick Henry before Sunday's game. The Ravens running back said the same thing about Robinson earlier this week, but King Henry proved superior in Week 5. Henry finished with 102 yards on the ground and an 18-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. The veteran running back also scored the critical two-point conversion to tie the game in the final minute.
Robinson didn't get the win but still played well, rushing for 86 yards on 17 carries and adding four catches for 32 yards. The Falcons superstar was unable to get into the end zone, though, which was likely the difference in the game. Bijan is clearly the best all-around back in football, but Henry reminded us all why he's headed to the Hall of Fame. His powerful running style was too much for the Falcons defenders.
NFC South standings: Falcons stuck in 2nd place
- Carolina Panthers (2-2)
- Atlanta Falcons (2-3)
- New Orleans Saints (1-4)
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-4)
The Falcons are still in second place following Sunday's loss to the Ravens. The Carolina Panthers were off for their bye this week, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got their first win of the season on Thursday night. The New Orleans Saints lost by 10 points to the Minnesota Vikings to drop to 1-4 on the season.
The division is still wide open, although the Panthers now sit alone in first place. The Falcons could have taken over first place with a win, but it just wasn't meant to be. We'll see how the team responds next week.
What's next for the Falcons in Week 6?
In Week 6, the Falcons will host the Chicago Bears at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET. It will be the first time in a month that Atlanta plays a regular afternoon game. That might be best for this team to get back in a normal routine, but the Bears are a major challenge.
Chicago is coming off a loss and will be desperate not to lose again in a tight NFC North race. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is reportedly close to returning, so keep your eye on the Bears injury report this week.
