Notre Dame football star quarterback C.J. Carr's dismantling of the Rice defense over the weekend certain passed the eye test, but it appears it passed the analytics test as well.
Carr received a 94.3 overall grade after completing 16 of 20 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns in Notre Dame's 52-0 victory Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium. What is more impressive is that Carr was able to compile those stats in just one half of play and one series after halftime. Backup Noah Grubbs came into the game in the third quarter and played the rest of the way.
Carr's command of the offense was just as impressive as his numbers. Notre Dame outgained Rice 478-128 while forcing five fumbles, and Carr made sure the defensive impact translated to points. The
Irish were up 42-0 at halftime and ended up finishing with their first shutout since 2022.
Notre Dame was expected to beat Rice and so the final score may not have been a surprise to some. Still, a 94.3 PFF grade for Carr shows that the quarterback continues to play with confidence and precision that will be required when Notre Dame does have tougher teams lined up on the other side later in the season.
