There are plenty of pundits who are down on Notre Dame after its loss this past weekend to BYU, and you can add former Irish assistant coach Urban Meyer to the list.
The Hall of Fame coach won multiple titles, leading both Florida and Ohio State to the promise land. Meyer knows good football, and national championship-level teams, and he doesn’t believe that the Irish are at the level right now.
When speaking on the “Don’t @ Me” podcast hosted by Dan Dakich, he was asked about Notre Dame’s schedule and playing in the SEC. Meyer predicted an undefeated regular season for the Irish, but at this point, he isn’t nearly as high on them as during the preseason. “If they had to play Florida’s schedule, if they had to play Georgia’s schedule. Heck if they had to play Ohio
State’s schedule, you’re looking at a 2-3 loss team.”
I personally don’t think that the SEC is all that great right now, as I do think the Irish would have a fairly solid record if they had the Bulldogs schedule. They’ve played just one ranked team, a win over Alabama, but did lose this past weekend to unranked Auburn. As for Florida, Meyer might have a point, as they’ve already faced three teams ranked at the time in the top-25 with another this weekend in Georgia.
The Buckeyes have one of the toughest schedules in the country, already facing Texas, Iowa and Indiana with USC and Northwestern as the remaining ranked opponents, while Oregon and Michigan have been ranked this year. He probably has a solid argument with Ohio State as well.
Meyer obviously picked some very tough schedules to compare Notre Dame against, and he might be right about how it would fare with a much tougher slate. I’d like to think that it wouldn’t be, but after what we saw this past weekend, many are questioning just how good the Irish are.
