Notre Dame legend Skylar Diggins' first season with the Chicago Sky may not have gone as planned, and now it appears the relationship between the two may be over.
Early Tuesday, the Sky announced that Diggins will not return for the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season as she continues to recover from a right knee injury. The Sky said the decision came after communication among Diggins, her representatives, team physicians, and Chicago's medical staff. All agreed that her long term health was priority.
The past season has been one quite full of ups and downs for both parties. The former Notre Dame star arrived in Chicago after signing a two-year contract worth $1.86 million dollars. Fans and media were excited at one of the WNBA's biggest stars joining
a team that was rebuilding, but could bring her veteran leadership to a franchise that was craving stability.
Instead, injuries and a change in role deterred those plans. Diggins started in 19 games and averaged 14.2 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.2 rebounds in 29.1 minutes per game. Then, in July, the season took an unexpected turn when Sky head coach Tyler Marsh moved her out of the starting lineup, and Diggins voiced her displeasure on social media.
Diggins was listed with a right knee injury shortly after the incident and has not suited up for the Sky since.
It appears now Diggins can focus on rehabilitating her knee injury while resting up as she prepares for her return in 2027.
