It wasn’t easy but Team USA got through group play with a perfect 3-0 record at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The Americans started off with a 94-61 win over China last week, squeezed out a 55-52 result against Italy on Sunday then overwhelmed Czech Republic with a 105-64 victory on Monday. A couple of former Notre Dame women’s basketball standouts, Jackie Young and Sonia Citron, contributed to USA’s efforts. Young, the Las Vegas Ace’s all-star shooting guard, is averaging a Team USA-best 11.3 points per game.
Young has scored 12 points twice. Her best balanced game was versus Italy when she had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 24 minutes.
Citron hasn’t seen much playing time for Team USA but performed
well against the Czech Republic. The Washington Mystics all-star recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals in 14 minutes.
The Americans are set to compete in the FIBA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals on Thursday.
