US LBM Coaches Poll No. 6 Notre Dame and Navy are set for the 99th edition of their historic rivalry on Saturday, as they battle for the prestigious Rip Miller Trophy at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
The Fighting Irish
will face Midshipmen junior quarterback Jackson Gutierrez, who has done a little bit everything this season. Gutierrez will go up against Notre Dame for the first time in his career. In seven games so far for Navy, Gutierrez is 32-of-64 on completions for 692-yards, seven touchdowns and an interception. He even had a 63-yard reception off a “Philly Special” play earlier in the season.
Throwing, however, is not Gutierrez’s specialty. On the ground, the junior has run for 869-yards and 12 TDs on 150 attempts. Gutierrez averages
5.8 yards-per-carry.
Gutierrez’s statistically-best game was in Navy’s 49-39 loss to North Texas last weekend. He was 7-of-10 on completions for 133-yards and a TD. He also had 228-yards rushing and three scores on 26 carries.
His best game on the ground included 232-yards rushing and three TDs on 41 carries in Navy’s 34-26 victory over Tulsa on Oct. 10.
The Irish have an all-time series record of 82-13-1 against the Midshipmen. The matchup includes Notre Dame’s historic 43-game win streak versus Navy between 1964 and 2007.
