Notre Dame is set to honor the late Lou Holtz after the team unveiled a special helmet decal dedicated to one the Irish’s most legendary coaches.
Holtz passed away at the age of 89 in March
, a couple of months after his family announced he entered end-of-life hospice care. The Irish plan to remember him with a helmet decal that includes “LOU” in white, cap-sized letters with a black background and two hands with fingers pointing up.Holtz compiled a 100-30-2 record during his time at Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996. The 2008 College Football Hall of Fame coach led the Irish to a 12-0 record and the program’s 11th national title in 1988.
From 1969 to 2004, Holtz also coached at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota and South Carolina – plus
a season with the New York Jets.
William & Mary football plans to honor Holtz prior to its season opener against Delaware State on Saturday. Holtz was an assistant coach for the Tribe in 1961-63 and a head coach from 1969 to 1971.
