Making it on Bruce Feldman's annual "Freaks List (subscription required)" does not necessarily mean you are one of the best players in college football that year, but it does make you one of the more notable ones.
The purpose of the list is to highlight the sport's most uncommon physical specimens, players whose size, speed, strength, explosiveness and movement skills separate them from typical athletes at their position. Notre Dame has a strong presence on the list having four of their players mentioned.
Francis Brewu is the highest Irish player on the list at No. 24. The former Pitt defensive tackle has reportedly squatted 685 pounds, benched 475 and posted a 33-inch vertical jump despite weighing 285 pounds.
Defensive lineman Bryce Young is
next on the list at No. 50. At 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, Young recorded a 34 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-5 broad jump, while also bench-pressing and power-cleaning 335 pounds.
Offensive tackle Anthonie Knapp checked in at No. 63 on the list. Knapp has started 27 games in the last two seasons for Notre Dame. He has reportedly had a 33-inch vertical jump as well as cleaned 345 pounds, squatted 585 and benched 405 pounds.
Also on the list was Elijah Hughes at No. 72. Despite being 6-foot-3 and 304-pounds, Hughes broad jumped almost 9 1/2 feet and vertical jumped 33 inches. He also squatted 610 pounds and cleaned 345.
Notre Dame football enters next season with high expectations next season as one of the favorites to win the college football national championship. Not only is the roster stacked with talented players, but this list shows that it has it's share of "freaks" as well.
A 6-6, 235-pound WR with an 82 1/2-inch wingspan who runs a 10.1 100M? A 327-pound DT who hit almost 21 MPH?!? And Jeremiah Smith clocked WHAT this off-season?!?
