Former Notre Dame running back Tyler Plantz was abruptly fired from his coaching position at a high school in Illinois over the weekend.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported on Sunday that Plantz, who graduated from Notre Dame in 2014, was let go from his role as head coach for the Providence Catholic football team despite a 4-0 start to the season.
Providence Catholic athletic director Doug Ternik provided a statement to the Sun-Times:
‘‘Providence Catholic High School is announcing a transition in the leadership of its football program as we move in a new direction. The Celtics thank Coach Tyler Plantz for his time and service as head coach and for his commitment to our student-athletes and football program since 2022. We are grateful for his contributions
to Providence Catholic and wish him and his family all the best in the future.’’
Ternik or any other Providence Catholic representatives have not provided an explanation for Plantz’s dismissal.
Plantz provided a statement on Monday, noting that he was unaware that he had been terminated from his position:

The Celtics won 35 games during Plantz’s time as head coach, and made an appearance in the Illinois High School Association Class 5A state title game last year.
Plantz was initially a walk-on at Notre Dame. He played football for three seasons and was a member of the Fighting Irish rugby squad for five years.
A native of Frankfort, Illinois, he appeared in a handful of football games, mainly as a special teams player for the Irish. Plantz was awarded a football scholarship prior to the start of the 2014 season.
Plantz previously worked several seasons as an offensive and special teams analyst for Notre Dame. He also held an assistant director of football operations position in the past.

The school announced the move on Sunday. Adam Nissen, the offensive coordinator, is the interim head coach for the rest of the season.
