Brian Newberry is in his fourth season as the head coach at Navy. On Saturday, Newberry will face US LBM Coaches Poll No. 6 Notre Dame for the third time in his head coaching career.
Newberry has guided the Midshipmen to a compiled 28-17 record so far. He led Navy to 10-3 and 11-2 records in 2024 and 2025, respectively, and Armed Forces and Liberty Bowl victories in previous seasons.
The Midshipmen also have a 2-1 record in the annual Army-Navy game under Newberry’s leadership.
So far this season, Navy is 2-5 as they get set to face the Fighting Irish on Saturday at noon on ABC. Newberry is 0-2 against Notre Dame, which includes a 42-3 loss in Dublin, Ireland in 2023 and a 49-10 result last season.
Navy has played in close games all season, with
each of the team’s losses by 10 points-or-fewer.
In Newberry’s press conference on Wednesday, he expressed high praise for the Irish.
“I think they’re excellent,” Newberry said. “The running backs are really good players. The receiving core is outstanding. The tight ends block well and they’re a threat in the pass game. There are no weaknesses when you watch (the Irish). They’re good across the board.”
Newberry was previously Navy’s defensive coordinator and safety coach in 2019-22 before he took over the program. A defensive back at Baylor in 1992-96, he coached for a variety of teams on the defensive side of the ball between 1999 and 2018.
"There's no weaknesses when you watch them... They're good across the board."
