The preseason watchlist for the 2026 Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award was announced on Wednesday, and one of Notre Dame’s own is in consideration.
The award, which recognizes the top freshman in college football, is named after Shaun Alexander – a former All-American running back at Alabama and a Pro Bowler for the Seattle Seahawks.
Notre Dame athletics announced that sophomore offensive lineman Will Black was named to the list. Black, who appeared in three games last season, is is in the mix as a starter on the Irish’s offensive line this season.
Despite being a sophomore, Maxwell Football Club guidelines allow Black to be eligible for the award.
A graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall (Conn.) and a 2025 Navy All-American, Black made his Notre
Dame debut in the team’s 49-10 win over Navy on Nov. 8 last season. Black helped the Irish record more than 500 yards of offense, including 249 rushing yards, and didn’t allow a single sack.
