Freshman running back Jonaz Walton had a spectacular day on the ground for US LBM Coaches Poll No. 3 Notre Dame on Saturday.
In the 37-26 win over North Carolina, Walton ran for 120-yards on 23 carries and had 5.2 yards-per-carry. It’s a freshman running back’s first 100-yard game since Chris Tyree accomplished the feat in 2020.
Tyree ran for 100-yards in two games for the Fighting Irish in the 2020 season. He had 103-yards and a TD on 11 carries in a 42-26 win over Florida State, then racked up 109-yards and a score on six carries in a 45-21 victory over Syracuse.
Walton joined Tyree, Tarean Folston, Robert Hughes, and Darius Walker as the only Notre Dame players to have a 100-yard rushing game since 1995, according to Tom Zwiller of Irish Illustrated.
Through four games so far, Walton has rushed for 228 yards on 39 carries for the Irish. He has yet to score his first-career touchdown.
Jonaz Walton is the first ND freshman RB with a 100-yard game since Chris Tyree in 2020.
