Purdue Athletics announced on Tuesday that the football team’s longstanding series with Notre Dame has been halted until further notice.
The decision comes after the Fighting Irish beat the Boilermakers, 49-10, on Sept. 26. According to Pete Sampson of The Athletic, US LBM Coaches Poll No. 6 Notre Dame was slated to host Purdue during Labor Day weekend in the 2027 season.
Purdue revealed its 2027 non-conference schedule, which includes UAlbany, Miami (Ohio) and West Virginia. The game against the Mountaineers is a new addition that will replace the originally scheduled matchup against the Irish.
The Boilermakers did not give a legitimate reason why they took Notre Dame off their 2027 schedule. Notre Dame and Purdue's initial series agreement started
in 2024 and was scheduled to go until 2028.
“The tradition-rich rivalry of Purdue and Notre Dame, a matchup that has been played on and off 90 times in program history, will be reevaluated for potential addition to future schedules,” said Tommy McClelland, Purdue’s vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics.
Notre Dame is 60-26-2 all-time against Purdue. One of the oldest rivalries in college football, the Boilermakers beat the Irish 28-22 in their first meeting on Nov. 14, 1896.
The Irish currently have a 9-game win streak against Purdue that’s lasted since 2008.
Purdue announces it will “pause” its football scheduling agreement with Notre Dame, which creates an opening in the Irish schedule next season. Notre Dame was scheduled to host Purdue on Labor Day weekend in 2027.
