The Raiders and Chargers faced teams in their respective season openers that appeared similarly low in the rankings. And yet the result was considerably different. The Raiders easily trounced the Dolphins 27-13 while the Chargers were beaten by a similar score 26-14 to the Cardinals.
Despite these lopsided results in opposite directions, the Chargers still open the week as heavy favorites over the Raiders.
I would call them the visiting Raiders, but that is not really how it works out when the Silver & Black come to LA. The crowd is typically more of a home field advantage than the Raiders even experience in Las Vegas, due to the considerable Raider fan presence in SoCal from the team's days in LA in the 80s and 90s.
What the odds tell us is that
betters are seeing the two results more as outliers than predictors for the level of talent that each team is fielding. The Chargers are still viewed as a potential playoff team while the Raiders are not. So, they are expected to rally after their season-opening upset in Arizona to put things together.
