Las Vegas Raiders guard Caleb Rogers had a big-time opportunity in Week 4 versus the Kansas City Chiefs. The sophomore guard found himself starting in place of the injured Jackson Powers-Johnson. Because Powers-Johnson had been underperforming, some believed Rogers could steal the starting job on a permanent basis with a strong showing.
Unfortunately, Rogers totally wasted his opportunity. The former Texas Tech lineman was a downright liability in the Raiders' 30-27 defeat. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones (and others) routinely feasted on him in pass protection.
Rogers was credited with allowing five total pressures. His pass-protection score from Pro Football Focus was an abysmal 7.6. He was also whistled for a penalty.
The Raiders had massive
protection issues versus the Chiefs. Rogers certainly contributed to those shortcomings. Even though starting quarterback Kirk Cousins was not sacked, he was under constant duress as the Raiders lost the battle in the trenches.
Rogers wasn't good enough to convince this Raiders coaching staff that he should be starting moving forward. Powers-Johnson missed the game with a groin injury, but hasn't been placed on IR. We'll evaluate his availability at practice this week. If Powers-Johnson is back healthy, he'll almost certainly be at right guard versus the New England Patriots in Week 5.
